Ethan Horvath transfers to New York Red Bulls from Cardiff City

HARRISON, N.J. — Goalkeeper Ethan Horvath has moved to MLS club New York Red Bulls from Cardiff City, a team in England’s third division, on Thursday, signing a contract for 1 1/2 seasons that includes options for the 2027-28 and 2028-29 seasons.
New York has agreed to compensate Charlotte with $75,000 in General Allocation Money for 2026, another $75,000 in GAM for 2027, and the highest of its second-round draft picks in 2027 in return for his discovery rights.
Horvath spent the initial part of this season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, a second-tier team, where he made 16 appearances, comprising 14 in league matches and two in the League Cup.
Although he was born in the United States, Horvath has yet to compete in MLS.
The 30-year-old has previously played for Molde, Club Brugge, Nottingham Forest, Luton, and Cardiff. He has represented the United States in 10 matches but does not seem to be included in manager Mauricio Pochettino’s plans for the upcoming World Cup this summer.
