LONDON — This is the type of bold decision that secures championships. It is also the kind of decision that many believe Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta struggles to make.

However, at the 72-minute mark, with his team struggling at 0-0 and the atmosphere at Emirates Stadium growing increasingly tense, Arteta looked to 16-year-old Max Dowman for a spark.

“I probably had a gut feeling in my mind,” Arteta stated. “He had been training well in the days leading up to this, and I sensed it was the right moment for him.

“It’s likely because he doesn’t appear to be intimidated by the occasion, the context, or the opponent. He plays so instinctively. He makes decisions that create opportunities, and what he produced was remarkable.”

Remarkable indeed. Dowman, in his seventh senior appearance and only his third in the Premier League, altered the trajectory of the 2-0 victory. He may have influenced the entire season.

In the 89th minute, as Everton retreated, he delivered a dangerous cross to the back post. Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had been flawless throughout the match, but he was unable to reach Dowman’s ball, allowing Piero Hincapié to connect with it using his knee, redirecting it to Viktor Gyökeres for a simple finish.

Frustration transformed into relief, which then turned into pure joy moments later when Arsenal cleared an Everton corner. Dowman outpaced Vitaliy Mykolenko and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall — the latter seemingly absent — to break free on goal with half the pitch wide open as Pickford was caught upfield.

Amidst the cacophony surrounding him, Dowman advanced and calmly placed the ball into the unguarded net, securing three vital points and becoming the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history at 16 years and 73 days. Having already made history as the youngest player to compete in the Champions League, he is now also the youngest player to score for Arsenal.

Moments that shape history often become clear only in retrospect. This felt significant in real time, prompting a rare Jürgen Klopp-style fist pump celebration from Arteta afterward, just before he praised the teenager who revitalized his struggling team.

“I believe he brought a different energy to the stadium,” Arteta remarked. “It’s not just the goal he scored; I think he transformed the game.

“Every time he received the ball, he made things happen. It appeared we were more threatening. To achieve that at such a young age, in this context, under this pressure, is simply extraordinary.

“I told him, ‘go and do your thing and win us the game.’ The same with Viktor and [Gabriel] Martinelli. I mentioned that these are the moments in the season when something special needs to occur, and he knows he has the talent, which I must allow him to showcase, and he will deliver.

“For me, [Dowman’s goal] felt like it lasted 45 seconds. It was truly special because you could sense the anticipation building, and when you saw there was no goalkeeper, you knew it was going to happen.

“And everyone was uplifted. It was incredible. The noise was overwhelming, so energetic. What a moment.”

Three of his five substitutes contributed to the opening goal, and Gyökeres has finally scored against a team in the top half of the table.

However, the spotlight will inevitably shine on Dowman. Arsenal has been cautious in managing his exposure, considering his young age, and Arteta’s hesitance to utilize him stems from a desire to safeguard a promising talent, as well as his coaching philosophy that favors predictability and reliability.

For extended stretches, Everton appeared comfortable with that. They should have taken the lead by halftime. Dwight McNeil struck the post and had another attempt blocked by Riccardo Calafiori, who lunged at the ball. Dewsbury-Hall also came close, and in the second half, Beto forced David Raya into a superb save before substitute Thierno Barry headed just wide.

Arteta sought to extend the celebration beyond Dowman, highlighting the contributions of his substitutes throughout the season.

“Gabi [Magalhães] and [Cristhian] Mosquera had to step in when Jurriën [Timber] was injured in the first half, and I think that has been a recurring theme this season,” Arteta noted.

“The impact of the substitutes has been crucial to our success. That reflects positively on the individuals we have in the dressing room because, at times, my decisions may not be right or fair, yet they accept it with the singular goal of helping the team win.”

There remain persistent concerns regarding Arteta’s capacity to effectively rotate his squad, particularly when they appear so lackluster for significant portions of the match as they did here.

It is reasonable to suggest that some players are overworked while others do not receive sufficient time to find their rhythm.

Nevertheless, despite a series of inconsistent performances, they continue to progress in all four competitions. Dowman’s performance ensures that. Only time will reveal if this moment will be remembered in Premier League history alongside Federico Macheda’s iconic goal for Manchester United against Aston Villa in April 2009, a hallmark of Sir Alex Ferguson’s risk-taking approach.

However, if this continues, utilizing Dowman regularly will not seem like a gamble at all.
