Dominik Solanke comments on Tottenham's scorpion goal: 'Had several glimpses' 1

LONDON — Tottenham Hotspur forward Dominic Solanke was captivated by his “extraordinary” scorpion-kick goal against Manchester City, finding himself unable to stop watching it on the large screen for the remainder of the match.

As a cross arrived just behind him, Solanke executed a stunning improvised finish, skillfully flicking the ball with his heel over City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and into the corner of the net, completing Tottenham’s comeback in a 2-2 draw in the Premier League.

Solanke mentioned he had to “create something from nothing” and would be “revisiting that moment several times.”

He has already begun doing so.

“I was attempting to maintain my focus on the match,” Solanke stated, “but I could hear the crowd cheering each time it appeared on the screen, so I took a few glances.”

The goal was reminiscent of a scorpion-style strike made by Olivier Giroud for Arsenal in a Premier League match on January 1, 2017, which earned FIFA’s Puskas Award for the best goal that year.

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank expressed after the match that he hoped the comeback could assist the team and the supporters in “creating some magic together.”

Frank has faced significant pressure following only two home victories this season, with fans frequently expressing their dissatisfaction, but he remarked: “I believe we can create something magical together with the players and the fans when we are united, as we were especially in the second half and also in the [Champions League victory over Borussia] Dortmund [on January 20]. That atmosphere, that intensity, is what motivated the players, and they truly needed it.”

“I would prefer things to go more smoothly; I think that is fair to say, but this is football. During this period, I believe we have accomplished more positive things than negative ones, but not enough performances have translated into results. However, I am pleased that we have had four solid performances and remain unbeaten.”
