Former Atlético Madrid striker David Villa has joined the club’s revamped board of directors following the completion of a majority acquisition by investment group Apollo Sports Capital on Thursday.

The agreement, which was revealed last November, was finalized on Thursday, with Apollo Sports Capital becoming the primary shareholder of the LaLiga team.

Enrique Cerezo and Miguel Angel Gil continue in their roles as chairman and chief executive, respectively, while Villa now serves as an advisor on the board of directors.

Villa was a member of the Atlético squad that secured the LaLiga title and reached the Champions League final in the 2013-14 season, and he holds the record as the all-time leading scorer for Spain’s national team. He also played for Barcelona and MLS team New York City FC.

“I am very pleased to return to the club with new responsibilities, but with the same commitment to help make Atlético de Madrid even more successful season after season,” he stated on the club’s website.

“The club has seen considerable growth in recent years, and I look forward to contributing to our ongoing success. I am very thankful that they considered me for this position.”

Cerezo expressed his enthusiasm for Villa’s return.

“This has always been your home, David,” he remarked. “We are delighted that you have taken on this challenge, and I am confident that, with your extensive experience, you will assist us in making Atlético de Madrid even stronger.”

The agreement also encompasses a capital investment of up to €100 million ($115m) designated for players and facilities.

Atlético stated that the €100 million will be allocated to its ambitious “Sport City” initiative, which is being developed alongside the Metropolitano Stadium, as well as being invested in the club’s football teams.

Apollo became minority stakeholders in Championship club Wrexham in December.

Gil commented on apollo.com: “We are proud to officially welcome Apollo Sports Capital to Atlético de Madrid as a dedicated, long-term partner that will enhance our rich legacy both on and off the pitch for our fans, players, coaches, staff, and community.”
