David Beckham discusses Inter Miami's upcoming stadium: 'Dreams can indeed become reality' 1

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham expressed that a dream has been realized as his team participated in its inaugural match at Nu Stadium on Saturday, resulting in a 2-2 draw against Austin FC.

The Englishman, who was instrumental in establishing the club in 2018 after a six-year stint with LA Galaxy and another six years facilitating Miami’s development, has witnessed the team’s rapid ascent to MLS champions and the home of Lionel Messi.

“When I arrived in America and joined the MLS 20 years ago, my aspiration was to secure championships, elevate the sport of soccer that I cherish deeply, and create my own team,” Beckham stated prior to the match against Austin.

“Thirteen years ago, I declared Miami as my choice. At that time, we had no name, no supporters, and no stadium. Today, I find myself in our new home.

“We are the MLS champions. We have the greatest player in the history of the sport playing in Miami. Dreams truly can become reality.”

Since making its MLS debut in 2020, Miami has attracted some of LaLiga’s most prominent stars from the past 15 years, including Gonzalo HiguaΓn, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, Luis SuΓ‘rez, and Messi, with Javier Mascherano serving as head coach since November 2024.

Following Messi’s arrival in 2023, Miami secured the Supporters’ Shield in 2024 and achieved their first MLS title in 2025, with the Argentine earning the league’s MVP award in both seasons.

Until now, however, the team has been playing its home matches in Fort Lauderdale, approximately 25 miles north of Miami.

Messi and Beckham were not the only notable figures present at Saturday’s match. Actor Matthew McConaughey, a member of Austin FC’s ownership group, even penned an open letter to Beckham to commend him on his nearly two-decade involvement with the league.

“As Austin comes to Miami today for a little celebration on your new pitch, I want to first extend a heartfelt ‘thank you’ — you didn’t create soccer in the US, but you certainly energized it,” the actor wrote.

“When you joined the Galaxy, you provided MLS with fresh legitimacy, transformed games into events, and effectively shifted MLS from a proving ground to a premier destination. THANK YOU.”
