In-form Southampton halted Championship leaders Coventry’s six-match winning streak with a 2-1 triumph at the CBS Arena.

Flynn Downes capitalized on a rebound to score shortly after the break, and Kuryu Matsuki extended Southampton’s lead with five minutes left on the clock.

Victor Torp’s penalty in stoppage time provided Frank Lampard’s team with a glimmer of hope in the closing moments, but the Sky Blues faced their second home defeat of the season.

This result allowed Tonda Eckert’s squad to maintain their pursuit of sixth-placed Wrexham in the playoff race, as the Saints extended their unbeaten streak across all competitions to 12 matches.

The match began cautiously, although Cyle Larin nearly broke the deadlock for Southampton when he narrowly missed the target after connecting with Matsuki’s header back across goal.

Larin, who netted a last-minute equalizer against West Brom on Wednesday, was one of three alterations to the Saints’ starting lineup.

A significant setback for the visitors occurred as Leo Scienza, who exited during the draw with the Baggies, was unable to recover in time to be included in the squad.

Coventry’s primary threat emerged from the left side through Ephron Mason-Clark, who outpaced James Bree and delivered a cross for Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, but the Japanese winger could only direct his header over the bar.

Luke Woolfenden then missed a close-range header from another Mason-Clark cross as Coventry continued to create problems from the flanks.

Southampton’s Bayern Munich loanee Daniel Peretz made a remarkable save to deny Liam Kitching from scoring on his 100th appearance for the Sky Blues.

Haji Wright, who was rested during Coventry’s 3-0 victory over Preston in midweek, returned to the starting lineup and nearly added to his tally of 16 league goals this season when he volleyed Mason-Clark’s cross just wide.

Southampton shocked the CBS Arena just three minutes after the restart.

Matsuki’s cross eluded both Larin and goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, hitting the post, where it was met by the advancing Downes, who scored from close range.

Ryan Manning came close to increasing Southampton’s lead six minutes later with a free-kick that narrowly missed the right post.

Wright, who had scored six goals in Coventry’s last six matches since the start of the year, was presented with a prime opportunity to equalize when he headed Milan van Ewijk’s cross directly at Peretz.

Southampton fortuitously doubled their lead when Bree’s corner struck the leg of the unmarked Matsuki and rolled past the helpless Rushworth.

Torp then converted a penalty he earned himself after being fouled by Shea Charles.

The expected pressure ensued as Coventry frantically sought an equalizer, but Peretz was able to exhale when he secured Romaine Esse’s shot following a goalmouth scramble.
