Chelsea has terminated the contract of head coach Liam Rosenior after a tenure of less than four months, as announced by the club on Wednesday.

The team’s disappointing 3-0 loss to Brighton on Tuesday marked their fifth consecutive league defeat without scoring, a first since 1912, and they are nearing the possibility of missing out on qualification for next season’s Champions League.

Currently, they sit seventh in the Premier League, trailing fifth-place Liverpool by seven points with five matches remaining.

“This decision has not been made lightly by the Club; however, recent performances and results have not met the required standards with much still at stake this season,” Chelsea stated. “Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam the best in his future endeavors.”

Calum McFarlane, who previously managed the club’s under-21 squad, will assume the role of interim head coach for the first team until the season concludes, having also stepped in temporarily when Chelsea dismissed Enzo Maresca in January.

“As the Club seeks to establish stability in the Head Coach position, we will engage in a process of self-reflection to ensure the right long-term appointment is made,” the statement continued.

Sources have informed ESPN that the club is not currently in active negotiations with any permanent candidates.

Rosenior joined Chelsea in January, succeeding Maresca, after coming from the club’s partner team Strasbourg, and signed a contract lasting 5Β½ years.

There has been increasing discontent among Chelsea fans in recent months, with vocal criticism directed at owners BlueCo, who also own Strasbourg as part of their multi-club ownership strategy.

A protest against BlueCo’s ownership occurred prior to last weekend’s home loss to Manchester United, and Rosenior faced criticism from some away supporters during Chelsea’s lackluster performance at Brighton on Tuesday.

Chelsea had aimed to keep Rosenior regardless of their Champions League qualification status but have grown concerned over the recent decline in results and rising unrest among fans.

Earlier reports indicated that Chelsea’s management was deliberating on the future of the 41-year-old on Wednesday, while players were given a day off.

Following these discussions, sources state that senior club officials informed players and staff first before publicly announcing their decision later on Wednesday.

Sources also noted that BlueCo believes Rosenior conducted himself commendably throughout his time in charge but felt that a change this week would provide the club with the best opportunity to salvage a disappointing season thus far.

The Blues are set to face Leeds in the FA Cup semifinal at Wembley on Sunday.

After previously defending his underperforming squad, Rosenior criticized the players following Tuesday’s defeat, labeling their performance as “indefensible.”

Chelsea has secured only one victory in their last nine league matches and will compete against Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Sunderland in their remaining four Premier League fixtures.

After winning the UEFA Conference League last season and claiming the Club World Cup last summer, Chelsea was eliminated from the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain with an aggregate score of 8-2 and was ousted from the Carabao Cup by rivals Arsenal.

Rosenior is the fifth long-term manager to be dismissed since U.S. owners Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly acquired one of England’s most prestigious clubs in 2022.
