Carrick refrains from declaring that Man United have ‘figured it out’ following victory over Tottenham.

Michael Carrick expressed that he believes Manchester United has “figured it out” after his ideal start continued with a victory over Tottenham, for which captain Cristian Romero issued an apology following his significant red card.

A year that commenced with Ruben Amorim’s sudden departure and some disappointing performances has been revitalized by the hiring of the Red Devils’ former midfielder, captain, and coach for the remainder of the season.

Carrick added to his victories against Manchester City, Arsenal, and Fulham with a 2-0 win over his old club Spurs on Saturday afternoon, where Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes secured a well-deserved victory against the 10-man visitors at Old Trafford.

This marked the first occasion in two years that United has achieved four consecutive Premier League wins, placing them fourth with 44 points—two points higher than their total from the previous season.

“It’s challenging to comment on what has changed,” Carrick, the successor to Ruben Amorim, stated. “I’m happy with the commitment, connection, and the investment from everyone involved. I believe that contributes significantly.

“At times, you can perceive the game unfolding in various ways, and it can appear quite different, whether positively or negatively.

“However, I think being in a really good emotional state benefits you, and once again, that has proven to be true.

“Today was different. We needed to manage the game, maintain control, and demonstrate patience and quality, but there are various methods to achieve that.

“The four matches we’ve played have all had slightly different appearances, but we are not becoming complacent. I’m not here thinking ‘everything’s perfect, we’ve solved it.’ There is still much work ahead, and I am fully conscious of that.”

Carrick commended star United captain Fernandes on a day when the recklessness of Tottenham’s captain adversely affected his team.

Thomas Frank defended Romero, emphasizing that he “clearly attempted to play the ball” when he struck Casemiro on the ankle, resulting in a red card in the 29th minute.

“He expressed regret for the incident,” the Spurs manager remarked. “He apologized to his teammates in the locker room.

“I consider him one of the most crucial players. When he performs at his best, he drives the team forward.”

This was Romero’s sixth red card across all competitions since his Tottenham debut in August 2021—more than any other Premier League player has accumulated during that timeframe.

This statistic surprised Frank, who stated he has no regrets about appointing him as captain and will not reconsider that role after a week in which he criticized Spurs’ “disgraceful” squad depth on social media.

Romero will begin a four-match suspension as Spurs prepare to face Newcastle on Tuesday, with Destiny Udogie potentially also sidelined due to injury as they aim for their first Premier League victory of 2026.

“We haven’t secured enough wins in the Premier League,” Frank remarked after overseeing a seventh consecutive top-flight match without a victory. “We’re just coming off the back of four solid games, where we also demonstrated considerable resilience.

“Prior to that, we performed well, but we didn’t achieve enough results to turn around in the second half, so I believe there’s still much to build on regarding resilience.

“However, naturally, the performances must be supported by doing a bit more and continuing to execute the right actions, as that will lead to improved results.”
