Benfica’s Mourinho receives two-match suspension for remarks against Porto.

José Mourinho will be absent from Benfica’s upcoming two matches as a result of his red card and subsequent altercation with an FC Porto assistant coach during last Sunday’s heated O Clássico.
The disciplinary council of the Portuguese federation has issued two rulings that effectively prohibit the 63-year-old Benfica manager from participating in the next two fixtures.
Mourinho received a one-match suspension for his red card received late in the 2-2 draw on Sunday.
This sanction was imposed after he exited his technical area and kicked a ball towards Porto’s substitutes’ bench in celebration of a goal. Mourinho stated that his intention was to kick it into the stands.
Mourinho, who is familiar with controversy, also faces an 11-day suspension due to his interaction with Porto assistant coach Lucho González.
The one-match suspension will be in effect for Benfica’s game on Saturday against Arouca. The 11-day suspension will prevent him from being present for the match against Vitoria on March 21. Portuguese media highlighted that the penalties cannot be served simultaneously.
Benfica announced their intention to appeal the rulings made on Thursday night, describing Mourinho’s punishment as “unfair and unjustified.”
The disciplinary council indicated that Mourinho instigated the confrontation with González by making a gesture with his index finger and thumb while repeatedly stating “you are small.” In response, González referred to Mourinho, who led Porto to the Champions League title in 2004, as “a traitor.”
González has also been handed a one-match ban along with an eight-day suspension.
