Benfica penalized for racist behavior of supporters during match against Real Madrid as Prestianni investigation continues.

NYON, Switzerland — UEFA imposed a fine on Benfica on Wednesday due to racist abuse directed at fans during a Champions League match against Real Madrid, where forward Vinícius Júnior was reportedly subjected to racial slurs by Gianluca Prestianni.
The investigation into Prestianni by UEFA is still in progress, and the ruling regarding a separate allegation against Benfica for fan misconduct during the February 17 match in Lisbon was announced on Wednesday.
Benfica received a fine of €40,000 ($46,000) for “illicit chants and gestures by two supporters,” according to UEFA. The club is required to undergo a one-year probation period to prevent the closure of a section of the Stadium of Light during a future European competition match.
Previously, Benfica had suspended five fans who were being investigated for “inappropriate behavior in the stands of a racist nature.”
Footage from the match captured some fans making monkey gestures following Madrid’s 1-0 victory in the first leg of the Champions League knockout stage.
The match was halted for nearly 10 minutes when Vinícius informed the referee that Prestianni referred to him as “monkey” after he scored and celebrated in front of Benfica supporters.
Prestianni, who has denied the accusation, lifted his jersey to cover his mouth at the time the alleged insult was made.
The Argentine winger was suspended by UEFA from participating in the second leg in Madrid while the investigation was ongoing. He is facing a potential 10-game suspension from UEFA competitions.
