Inter Miami CF co-owner David Beckham stated that the organization will take its time in appointing a new head coach following Javier Mascherano’s exit.

Mascherano officially declared on Tuesday that he would resign as manager for personal reasons, effective immediately. Sporting director Guillermo Hoyos will now serve as the interim head coach.

“With Javier obviously leaving us two days ago, that’s a difficult one,” Beckham remarked on CBS Sports.

“He came off the back of last season by winning our first championship. He’s an incredible individual, a fantastic coach, the players appreciated him, but obviously, these situations arise in football clubs and we must move forward. We need to identify a new coach at some point. However, for now, we need to allow things to stabilize. But, as I mentioned, owning a team always presents challenges.”

Mascherano departed Inter Miami after nearly a year and a half with the club, having joined in November 2024 when he succeeded former manager Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino. In his inaugural year, Mascherano guided the team to the historic 2025 MLS Cup, the Leagues Cup final, and the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal.

The team is currently positioned third in the Eastern Conference standings with a 3W-3D-1L record and was eliminated by Nashville SC in the Concacaf Champions Cup round of 16.

A source informed ESPN that Mascherano decided to leave the club over the weekend, following the 2-2 draw against the New York Red Bulls at NU Stadium on April 11.

Hoyos confirmed he will assume the role for as long as Inter Miami requires his services.

“I am at the club’s service, and that means today I’m in a different situation,” Hoyos stated in a mixed zone on Wednesday. “A couple of days ago, I was in a different role, and I’m here for whatever the club needs. In this case, we’re on the front line, as we like to say.”

Inter Miami will return to play on Saturday when they travel to face the Colorado Rapids at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium.
