Bayern Munich sets Bundesliga record with five matches remaining 1

Bayern Munich has established a new Bundesliga milestone by scoring their 102nd league goal of the season against St. Pauli on Saturday.

Leon Goretzka’s strike allowed Bayern to surpass the previous record of 101 goals set during the 1971-72 season. This was a time when legends such as Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller led Bayern to a remarkable 11-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund.

With five matches remaining, Bayern still has the opportunity to reach the benchmark established by Manchester City’s squad, which included Sergio Agüero and set a Premier League record of 106 goals in the 2017-18 season, or Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid team that netted 121 in La Liga during the 2011-12 campaign.

Aiming for either of those records would be particularly notable since Bayern has four fewer matches to achieve it, owing to the Bundesliga’s 34-game format.

The overall record in Europe’s top five leagues stands at 125 goals, achieved by Torino in Serie A during the 1947-48 season across a 40-game schedule.

This season has been remarkable for Vincent Kompany’s team, which maintains a significant advantage in the Bundesliga.

Bayern set a record for Europe’s top five leagues by winning their initial 14 matches. Throughout this period, they became the quickest team in Bundesliga history to reach 50 goals.

Lennart Karl’s last-minute goal in a 3-2 comeback victory over Freiburg last week marked Bayern’s 100th Bundesliga goal of the season.

England forward Harry Kane has been a standout performer with 31 league goals as he pursues Robert Lewandowski’s Bundesliga record of 41. Luis Díaz (15) and Michael Olise (12) have also contributed with double-digit goals from the flanks.

In addition to being strong contenders for the Bundesliga title, Bayern will host Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday with a 2-1 advantage in their Champions League quarterfinal, while they are set to face Bayer Leverkusen in the German Cup semifinals later this month.
