Barcelona inflicts heavy defeat on Real Madrid in 'historic' UWCL match 1

MADRID — Barcelona midfielder Patri Guijarro referred to their 6-2 Women’s Champions League victory over Real Madrid as a “historic result” on Wednesday, emphasizing that the team would perform “at 200%” in the second leg despite holding a four-goal advantage.

Ewa Pajor netted two goals in the quarterfinal first leg at the Alfredo di Stéfano stadium, including the opening goal just six minutes into the match, while Esmee Brugts, Irene Paredes, Vicky López, and Alexia Putellas also scored for the visitors, with Linda Caicedo scoring twice for Madrid.

This outcome positioned Barcelona on the brink of achieving a record-extending eighth consecutive semifinal and improved their record against Madrid to 22 victories in 23 encounters.

This was the first of three clashes between the teams within a span of just over a week, with another Clásico scheduled in Liga F on Sunday, followed by the return leg in Barcelona the following Thursday.

“It was a truly comprehensive performance, deserving of the Champions League,” Guijarro stated. “It was a historic result, but we are most satisfied with our style of play.

“This is just the first leg. We will approach the second leg with the same intensity. I believe we earned this … While it may appear that we could ease off on Sunday with a four-goal cushion, the reality is quite the opposite. You know us.”

Barcelona were UWCL runners-up in 2025, having claimed the title in 2021, 2023, and 2024, while Madrid — whose women’s team was established in 2020 — are competing at the quarterfinal stage for the second consecutive season.

“We struggled today,” goalkeeper Misa Rodríguez remarked. “We need to evaluate our mistakes, as conceding six goals indicates shortcomings, and then we must move forward.”

Madrid coach Pau Quesada commended two-goal scorer Caicedo — who recently renewed her contract with Madrid until 2030 — as “one of the best players in the world.”

“She supports us, and we must support her,” Quesada noted. “We aim to develop a Real Madrid with players capable of making a significant impact.”
