Athletic Club Academy Trio Score First Senior Goals in 6-1 Copa del Rey Win at Prat
Edin Terzić’s squad defeated Prat 6-1 in the Copa del Rey, with three academy players netting their first senior goals for Athletic Club within a four-minute span. The late surge was delivered by substitutes in a side rotated with the Basque derby in mind.
Athletic faced Prat on Thursday 29 October in the Copa del Rey round of 128. The match took place at the Estadi La Feixa Llarga in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, where the academy players dominated the closing stages.
All three late scorers entered as substitutes. Selton Sánchez completed the scoring with the sixth goal, assisted by Vizcay, whose own strike had initiated the flurry.
Aritz Conde received an 8.2 rating from the data provider for his thirty-minute appearance. Imga, who was only 17 years old, had previously made his first-team debut alongside Vizcay against Getafe the previous Sunday.
A rotated line-up had the tie settled by half-time
According to EFE, Athletic selected a starting XI influenced by the upcoming Basque derby, offering opportunities to players like Yohaneko, Sannadi, and Nico Serrano. These adjustments did not hinder the visitors’ momentum.
Maroan Sannadi opened the scoring in the 29th minute, followed by Robert Navarro doubling the lead two minutes later, with Mikel Jauregizar providing both assists. Gustavo Reinke pulled one back for Prat in the 33rd minute, assisted by Álex Plaza. Serrano restored the two-goal cushion three minutes later from a pass by Jesús Areso.
Statistics highlighted the one-sided nature of the night. Athletic controlled 68% of possession and recorded 20 shots from inside the box. They registered 12 attempts on target compared to 2 from the hosts. Prat’s goalkeeper made six saves, while Navarro earned the highest rating of 9.2 with seven key passes in 86 minutes.
Miguel Ángel Motoso’s Prat entered the tie having defeated San Rafael 5-1 and 5-0 in their two prior matches. The draw resonated for Athletic, whose path to their most recent Copa title began on 1 November 2023 against another Liga Élite Catalana side located approximately 22 km from L’Hospitalet.
The Real Sociedad derby follows three days later
This rotation ensures Terzić’s regular attackers remain fresher for the weekend. On Sunday 1 November, San Mamés hosts the LaLiga matchday 11 clash with Real Sociedad, scheduled to kick off at 21:00 Spanish time. Athletic’s recent form includes a 1-0 victory over the same opponents.
The cup campaign now pauses. The RFEF’s first national round involved 112 of the 116 clubs entered in this season’s competition, which continues until 24 April 2027. The last 32 is scheduled for 16 December, with the last 16 on 6 January. Prior to that, the second round is set for 2 December.
