Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa commended Jude Bellingham on Tuesday, referring to the midfielder as “a leader” who will serve as a “cornerstone of this team for many years.”

Arbeloa’s squad is set to face Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday, where a victory would secure their advancement to the knockout stage.

Bellingham experienced a gradual start to the 2025-26 season as he recovered from shoulder surgery last summer, but he has recently made a significant impact in Madrid’s performances under new coach Arbeloa, netting a goal in last week’s 6-1 triumph over Monaco.

“It’s not that [Bellingham] was unexpected, but from the very beginning, I’ve recognized a player with outstanding quality and skills,” Arbeloa stated during a news conference on Tuesday. “Anyone who has watched him on television is aware of it, but witnessing it in person is even more remarkable.

“Aside from his footballing talent, I’ve observed a player who aspires to be a leader, a role model. Just the other day, 48 hours after a match, I told him — and I rarely say this — ‘stop running.’ The effort he’s displaying in training, his dedication, and his leadership … I take great pride in having a player like Jude Bellingham.”

Bellingham has recorded four goals in 17 LaLiga matches this season, along with two goals in six Champions League appearances.

He was among several players who received whistles from fans at the Bernabéu following the dismissal of Arbeloa’s predecessor, Xabi Alonso, and celebrated his goal against Monaco last week with a ‘drinking gesture’ aimed at addressing online speculation regarding his off-field conduct.

“There are two ways to approach it: you can lament and complain, or you can engage a lawyer, or you can simply embrace it and enjoy it,” Bellingham told TNT Sports. “I know the truth, I understand what truly occurs in my personal life, and I recognize what I contribute to the game and the team. All the external chatter is inconsequential.”

Arbeloa has consistently praised Bellingham since assuming control of the team earlier this month.

“On the field, he’s capable of excelling in numerous aspects,” the coach remarked on Tuesday. “He’s a player who makes runs into space, penetrates the box, possesses a strong shot, and comprehends the game well. Although he’s young, he has considerable experience. He is going to be a foundational player for this Real Madrid for many years.”
