AC Milan’s Loftus-Cheek hospitalized following clash with goalkeeper

MILAN — AC Milan fell further behind city rivals Inter Milan following a 1-0 defeat to Parma at home on Sunday, a match that resulted in Milan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek being hospitalized after a clash with the Parma goalkeeper.
Loftus-Cheek was hit on the head during a collision with Edoardo Corvi after a cross into the box approximately 10 minutes into the game at San Siro.
The 30-year-old Loftus-Cheek had visible facial injuries while receiving treatment on the pitch. He was taken off on a stretcher with a neck and head brace and subsequently transported to the hospital.
Reports from Italian media indicated that the England international and former Chelsea player suffered broken teeth and was undergoing evaluation for potential head trauma.
“Our thoughts are with him,” said Parma coach Carlos Cuesta.
United States forward Christian Pulisic made his return to the starting lineup for Milan, but it proved fruitless as Mariano Troilo netted a header from a corner in the 80th minute to secure the victory for Parma. The goal was initially ruled out for a foul but was allowed after a video review.
Milan entered the match aiming to reduce its deficit to Inter to seven points. Inter extended its lead to 10 points with a 2-0 win at Lecce, marking its seventh consecutive league victory on Saturday.
Milan had already dropped points at home in a 1-1 draw against Como on Wednesday.
This marked Parma’s third consecutive victory, placing them in 12th position.
