Jermall Charlo set to face Armando Resendiz for WBA title on May 2
Jermall Charlo (34-0, 23 KOs) is set to face Armando Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs) for the WBA super middleweight title on May 2, serving as the co-main event for Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez’s unified cruiserweight title defense against David Benavidez in Las Vegas, as confirmed by sources to ESPN on Tuesday.
This matchup will be featured in the PBC Pay-Per-View event on Prime Video, taking place at T-Mobile Arena.
Negotiations for Resendiz to meet Charlo in his inaugural title defense commenced a month ago after a proposed bout with Jaime Munguia reportedly fell through. Resendiz, who captured the interim title with a surprising victory over Caleb Plant last May, was elevated to full champion following Terence Crawford’s retirement in December. Charlo, who appeared on the same card, halted Thomas LaManna to conclude an 18-month break from boxing. Resendiz’s victory disrupted plans for a fight between Plant and Charlo.
Consequently, Resendiz faces a challenging task in his first title defense against the former two-division world champion.
Charlo, 35, has claimed world titles in both middleweight and junior middleweight but has competed infrequently over the last five years, participating in only four bouts since 2020. Nevertheless, he retains an unblemished record and aims to become a three-division world champion when he takes on the upset-minded Resendiz.
Following his win over Plant, Resendiz now seeks to validate that achievement by defeating another prominent name in the first defense of his WBA title.
Resendiz, 27, gained recognition after knocking out Jarrett Hurd in 2023. However, his momentum was halted when he was stopped by Elijah Garcia in his subsequent fight. After returning to victory against Fernando Paliza, he was given the opportunity to face Plant, where he was viewed as merely an opponent before surprising the former super middleweight champion.
