British trio claim European boxing silvers after final defeats

Great Britain’s trio of finalists all lost their bouts at the European Boxing Championships as they claimed three silver medals.

Both Chantelle Reid and Abdul Burton suffered 5-0 defeats in their categories.

Commonwealth Games silver medallist Reid was beaten by Turkey’s Busenaz Surmeneli in the light-middleweight final.

“I’m happy to come away with a silver, obviously I would’ve preferred a gold but I shared the ring with a really good opponent,” said Reid.

“I feel like I performed the best I could but I’m looking forward to fighting her again. It’s been an amazing tournament, four really good fights and getting these medals at major competitions, I’m really grateful.”

Meanwhile 20-year-old Burton lost to Russian Viacheslav Rogozin in the men’s super-bantamweight and was emotional in his post-fight interview.

“It’s not the gold I aimed for, but silver in my first major, I’m still happy,” Burton said.

“I’ll learn from it and come back. Five fights out here against top kids, it’s been a great experience. To step up to seniors from the under-23s, I’m happy, it’s never nice to lose but I will move on.”

In the final fight of the day, Damar Thomas, the 21-year-old Commonwealth gold-medal winner, lost 3-2 in a close contest with Russia’s David Surov in the men’s super-heavyweight.

GB took 15 boxers to the championships and have claimed five medals but no gold, after Callum Makin and Dimeji Shittu earned bronzes on Thursday – when Irish boxer Lisa O’Rourke won gold in the women’s 80kg final.
