Anthony Joshua set to resume training, potential summer fight anticipated - Eddie Hearn 1

NOTTINGHAM, England — Anthony Joshua is anticipated to return to training in the upcoming weeks and may compete this summer, as disclosed by promoter Eddie Hearn.

Joshua’s boxing career has been in doubt following a car accident in Nigeria in December that resulted in the deaths of two of his close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele.

Although Joshua emerged from the incident with no significant physical injuries, the gravity of the situation and the loss of his friends raised questions about his return to the sport.

Nonetheless, Hearn has indicated that Joshua is beginning to prepare for a comeback later this year.

“Initially, the plan for AJ was for him to compete in March and then face Tyson Fury in August. That is no longer the case,” Hearn informed the media in Nottingham on Thursday.

“He will not be fighting Tyson Fury next. I believe he will return in late summer, but he is not yet in a condition to resume training.

“I am making plans, but he is currently resting and getting ready.

“Therefore, I am considering options to have him back in the ring around July, but we will only know if that is feasible once he returns to training, which we hope will be in the next couple of weeks or a month.

“Every fight poses risks, especially considering what he has experienced. We are open to the Fury match but it is likely to occur later in the year, possibly early 2027.”

Last month, Joshua addressed the public for the first time since the accident, expressing gratitude for the support he received and pledging to honor the aspirations of his “brothers.”

“My aim is to continue assisting them in achieving their goals. Even though they may not be physically present, I believe spiritually they will guide me,” Joshua stated.

“It will require more than just physical strength to overcome this; it will demand a lot.

“A significant amount of strength from a higher power, so I will certainly be offering my prayers, and I am committed to helping them realize their dreams for their families.”
