U.S. Uses Six-Goal Second Period to Skate Past Switzerland, 10-0
FRISCO, Texas – Behind a 26-save shutout by Joey Slavick (Westland, Mich.) and two goals each from Richard Gallant (Concord, Mass.), Cole McKinney (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Will Moore (Ithaca, N.Y.), the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team defeated Switzerland, 10-0, here tonight at Comerica Center in preliminary round play of the 2025 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship.
Team USA continues preliminary round play here Saturday (April 26) against Sweden. Faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m. local, 8:00 p.m. ET and the game can be seen live on NHL Network.
“Today’s game demonstrated a mature level of play," said Greg Moore, head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team. "Our puck handling skills progressively improved throughout the duration of the game. The team’s confidence was evident in their performance. Our special teams executed at an exceptional level, and Joey Slavick provided solid goaltending support.”
The U.S. got on the board just 1:13 into the contest on a delayed penalty as Jack Murtagh (East Greenbush, N.Y.) deflected home a shot from LJ Mooney (West Mifflin. Pa.).
HIGHLIGHTS
Mikey Berchild (Minnetonka, Minn.) tallied his second of the tournament 3:10 later to put Team USA up, 2-0. Mooney picked up another helper as he skated back towards the blue line, turned on his edges and rushed towards the net. He made his way around the crease and found Berchild in the slot, who snapped it past Swiss goaltender Matia Birchler.
Team USA added its third goal of the frame after Gallant made a touch pass from the slot to McKinney who found the back of the net at 8:53.
Moore put the U.S. ahead, 4-0, just 1:48 into the middle frame while Benjamin Kevan (Fairfield, Calif.) tallied his first of the tournament :37 later as he stole the puck in the offensive zone and fired it home.
Gallant buried his first at 4:46 on the power play, and Mooney made it 7-0 at 6:19 with a highlight-reel goal, spinning around the defender and putting it past Swiss goalie Jovin Trachsel who came in for Birchler. McKinney added another, followed by Moore to account for Team USA’s six goals in the middle frame.
Gallant netted his second of the contest, unassisted and shorthanded, at 8:23, to account for the 10-0 final.
