FRISCO, Texas – The U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team fell against Sweden, 4-3, here tonight at Comerica Center in the semifinal round of the 2025 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship.
Team USA will play for a bronze medal here tomorrow (May 3) inside Comerica Center against Slovakia. Faceoff is set for 2:30 p.m. local, 3:30 p.m. ET and can be seen live on NHL Network.
“We gave ourselves the best possible chance to win,” said Greg Moore (Lisbon, Maine), head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team. “I thought their goaltender did a good job at making some big saves. I’m proud of this group and the process we’ve followed. Our guys worked really hard and played well and I thought they deserved a better outcome.”
Starting U.S. netminder Patrick Quinlan (Kennett Square, Pa.) kept the game scoreless at 4:40 of the first, as he sprawled to deny a Swedish point-blank shot. He finished the contest with 19 saves.
The U.S. had a flurry of chances with just over 5:00 to play but didn’t find the back of the net. Despite 20 combined shots in the opening frame, including 11 from the U.S., the game remained tied at zero.
HIGHLIGHTS
Will Horcoff (Birmingham, Mich.) nearly opened the scoring at 1:45 of the middle frame but was turned aside after a feed from Will Moore (Ithaca, N.Y.). Garrett Lindberg (Moorhead, Minn.) broke the game open at 5:14 with help from Drew Schock (Green Bay, Wis.) and Cullen Potter (Minneapolis, Minn.). Schock found Lindberg at the top of the faceoff dot who fired one past Swedish goaltender Love Harenstam.
Sweden responded 3:11 later to knot the contest at one and took the lead at 10:13. Jack Murtagh (East Greenbush, N.Y.) nearly found an equalizer on a breakaway chance, but Harenstam kept Sweden in front with a pad save.
Schock found the scoresheet once again and tallied one unassisted at 14:53 to make it 2-2. He carried the puck from the defensive zone and corralled his own rebound from behind the net to beat Harenstam.
Sweden made it 3-2 at the 7:27 mark of the third and tallied its fourth goal of the game at 13:22.
The U.S. got one back at 15:36 as a dump off the boards from Lindberg bounced off Harenstam to Potter in the slot who scored to cut the deficit to one. Team USA emptied its net with 58 seconds to play, but could not convert, falling by a score of 4-3.
