“Good teams adapt and find ways to win,” said Greg Moore (Lisbon, Maine), head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team. “Our group is deserving of a 4-0 record after the preliminary round. Today’s win was heavily dependent on our special teams. We will need to maintain that level of execution in the quarterfinals.”
Germany struck first at 11:38 in the first period, but less than three minutes later Asher Barnett (Wilmette, Ill.) answered off the rebound of a blast by Benjamin Kevan (Fairfield, Calif.).
Germany regained the lead at 3:16 of the second with a shot from the inside hash marks before Mikey Berchild (Minnetonka, Minn.) tallied his fourth goal of the tournament on the power play at the top of the faceoff dot to even the contest. Drew Schock (Green Bay, Wis.) and Cullen Potter (Minneapolis, Minn.) drew assists on the play.
Germany went ahead again 3:19 later after it scored in a scramble in front of the net, but again, the U.S. rallied to even the contest as Will Horcoff (Birmingham, Mich.) sniped one past German netminder Aaron Kaiser at the 15:22 mark, with Will Moore (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Potter tallying helpers.
Gallant gave the U.S. its first lead of the game 1:10 later after he forced a turnover and converted on a shorthanded breakaway.
The U.S. had a 15-7 advantage in shots on goal in the third, including an empty net tally by Gallant with :02 left, to account for the 5-3 final score.
Patrick Quinlan (Kennett Square, Pa.) picked up the win in the U.S. net with 22 saves.
