ČESKÉ BUDĚJOVICE, Czechia – Gwyneth Philips (Athens, Ohio) recorded her first-career shutout with Team USA to help propel the U.S. Women’s National Team to a 4-0 victory over Czechia at the 2025 IIHF Women’s World Championship in Budvar Arena.
“Tonight’s crowd was incredible. It’s always fun to play in these types of games,” said John Wroblewski (Nennah, Wis.), head coach of the 2025 U.S. Women’s National Team. “Gwyneth played a strong game in net for us, and we made it difficult all game long.”
Czechia opened the game drawing an early penalty, but it was the U.S.’ penalty kill that held them to zero shots.
Abbey Murphy (Evergreen Park, Ill.) put the U.S. on the board as time expired on a Team USA power play with 5:08 remaining in the period. Caroline Harvey (Salem, N.H.) faked a shot from the point before slipping it over to Murphy who blasted a one-timer past Michaela Hesová’s blocker side.
HIGHLIGHTS
Just a minute later goaltender Gwyneth Philips (Athens, Ohio) kept Czechia off the board after a turnover behind the U.S. net resulted in a point-blank shot from the crease.
Murphy doubled Team USA’s lead 6:58 into the middle fame, collecting a loose rebound that bounced out to her in the high slot.
Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) opened a 3-0 lead for the U.S. on the power play just 2:28 into the final frame. Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) circled behind the net before passing up to a waiting Megan Keller (Farmington Hills, Mich.). Keller’s shot went wide but bounced right back to a waiting Knight on the doorstep.
Carpenter added the fourth of the game on the power play with 12:38 remaining, giving the U.S. a 4-0 lead.
Philips recorded 10 saves in net to earn her first IIHF Women’s World Championship victory and first career Team USA shutout.
Next up, the U.S. will face Canada, on Sunday (April 13). Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. CET (1 p.m. ET) and can be viewed live on NHL Network.
