HERNING, Denmark – A pair of power-play goals from Frank Nazar (Mount Clemens, Mich./Chicago Blackhawks/University of Michigan) helped lift the U.S. Men’s National Team to a 5-2 victory over in its final preliminary round game of the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship here tonight at Jyske Bank Boxen.

With the win, secured second place in Group B and will play in the quarterfinal round of the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship Thursday (May 22). The time, location and opponent will be determined at the end of the preliminary round. All U.S. games during the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship can be seen live on NHL Network.

“I loved our effort and how we played to our identity,” said Ryan Warsofsky, head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team. “Give our power play credit too. Overall, great team effort and a good step forward as we continue to build.”

Josh Doan (Scottsdale, Ariz./Utah Mammoth/Arizona State University) opened the scoring at 9:25 of the first with his first-ever goal in a Team USA jersey, as he battled in front of the net to convert a rebound opportunity following a shot from the point off the stick of Andrew Peeke (Parkland, Fla./Boston Bruins/University of Notre Dame).

Matty Beniers (Hingham, Mass./Seattle Kraken/University of Michigan) nearly doubled the U.S. lead with 5:08 left in the opening period on the power play. Beniers fired a pair of shots on Czech netminder Karel Vejmelka, but both chances were denied. Team USA outshot Czechia, 23-8, in the opening 20 minutes.

David Pastrňák tied the contest for the Czechs 41 seconds into the second converting on a breakaway shot just over the glove of U.S. goaltender Jeremy Swayman (Anchorage, Alaska/Boston Bruins/University of Maine).

Swayman came up large with 12:59 remaining in the second, as he sprawled across the crease to deny a Czech opportunity following an unfortunate bounce in front of his net. He finished the contest with 25 saves.

Martin Necas gave Czechia its first lead of the game on the power play at 8:33, firing a one-timer from the left circle home.

Nazar tied the game at 2-2 on the power play at 1:35 of the third, as he redirected a one-timer from Will Smith (Lexington, Mass.//Boston College) past Vejmelka.

Nazar reclaimed the lead for Team USA with his second power-play tally of the game, deflecting a shot from Cutter Gauthier (Scottsdale, Ariz./Anaheim Ducks/Boston College) into the back of the net at 7:01.

Logan Cooley (Pittsburgh, Pa./Utah Mammoth/University of Minnesota) added to the U.S. lead at 13:29 as he directed a pass from Clayton Keller (St. Louis, Mo./Utah Mammoth/Boston University) home. Peeke scored an empty-net goal at 17:06 to account for the 5-2 final.

NOTES: Frank Nazar was named U.S. Player of the Game … The U.S. went 2-6 on the power play, while Czechia was 1-5 … Team USA outshot Czechia, 56-27.
