HERNING, Denmark – Frank Nazar (Mount Clemens, Mich./Chicago Blackhawks/University of Michigan) and Cutter Gauthier (Scottsdale, Ariz./Anaheim Ducks/Boston College) each scored twice as the U.S. Men’s National Team defeated Hungary, 6-0, in 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship preliminary round action here today at Jyske Bank Boxen.

“I thought we got better as the game went on,” said Ryan Warsofsky, head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team. “I was pleased with our effort overall and now we’ll turn our attention to the Swiss.”

Nazar opened the scoring for the U.S. at 14:07 of the opening period, redirecting a shot from Logan Cooley (Pittsburgh, Pa./Utah Mammoth/University of Minnesota) past Hungarian netminder Adam Vay. Nazar added another tally 2:47 later, as he fired a shot from behind the goal line that deflected off the goaltender and in to give a 2-0 lead.

The U.S. took a three-goal lead at 10:02 of the second, as Gauthier wristed a shot past Vay from the right faceoff circle off a pass from Matty Beniers (Hingham, Mass./Seattle Kraken/University of Michigan).

HIGHLIGHTS

U.S. netminder Jeremy Swayman (Anchorage, Alaska/Boston Bruins/University of Maine) made a flurry of stops with just over five minutes remaining in the middle frame to keep Hungary off the scoresheet. He finished the game with a 13-save shutout.

Gauthier found the back of the net for the second time at 1:13 of the final frame, as he blasted a one-timer home to put the U.S. ahead, 4-0. Conor Garland (Scituate, Mass./Vancouver Canucks) scored just 41 seconds later, capitalizing on a rebound chance to give Team USA a five-goal cushion.

Clayton Keller (St. Louis, Mo./Utah Mammoth/Boston University) sent a nifty cross-ice pass to Cooley, who fired home a one-timer from the bottom of the right circle at 14:26 to account for the 6-0 final.

Team USA will take on in its third game of the preliminary round tomorrow (May 12) at 4:20 p.m. local time (10:20 a.m. ET). All U.S. games during the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship can be seen live on NHL Network.
