U.S. Falls to Switzerland, 3-0, at Men’s Worlds
HERNING, Denmark – The U.S. Men’s National Team dropped a preliminary round contest at the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship to Switzerland, 3-0, here today at Jyske Bank Boxen.
“Give credit to Switzerland,” said Ryan Warsofsky, head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team. “But I know our group has a lot more in them. We’ll re-group and get ready to play Norway.”
Switzerland’s Damien Riat opened the scoring at 12:46 of the first, deflecting a bouncing puck into the back of the net. Jonas Siegenthaler doubled the Swiss lead at 15:59, scoring on a shot from the point through traffic.
U.S. netminder Joey Daccord (North Andover, Mass./Seattle Kraken/Arizona State University) held off Switzerland with a sequence of stops with 11:30 left to play in the second frame. He finished the contest with 24 saves.
The U.S. challenged Swiss goaltender Leonardo Genoni in the final moments of the second, but could not cut the deficit, despite outshooting Switzerland, 18-16, through 40 minutes.
Alex Vlasic (Wilmette, Ill./Chicago Blackhawks/Boston University) made a stellar defensive play with 14:02 left in the final period, as he extended his stick to block a one-timer following a cross-ice pass toward Daccord’s glove side.
Daccord came up large again for the U.S. with 12:06 to play in the third, as he tracked a pass from behind the net to deny a point-blank chance.
Switzerland added to its lead at 11:51, as Dean Kukan scored on a one-timer that redirected off an American defender’s stick into the net.
Team USA takes the ice against Norway for its fourth of seven preliminary round contests on Wednesday (May 14) at 4:20 p.m. local time (10:20 a.m. ET). All U.S. games during the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship can be seen live on NHL Network.
