BOSTON – The U.S. Men’s National Team battles Canada here tonight in the 4 Nations Face-Off championship game, with opening faceoff set for 8:20 p.m. ET from TD Garden. The game will air live on ESPN.
To say there is a fever pitch around the game is an understatement. The contest is perhaps the most anticipated U.S. men’s international game since the 2010 Olympic gold medal battle between the U.S. and Canada in Vancouver.
GAME STATS
Team USA finished round robin play at the top of the standings with six points. The U.S. won its opening two contests in the tournament, including a 6-1 victory over Finland on Feb. 13 and a 3-1 triumph over Canada on Feb. 15 in Montreal. With a depleted lineup, Team USA fell to Sweden in its final round robin game by a 2-1 count on Monday in a game whose only real meaning was national pride.
Canada was second in round robin play with five points. The Canadians beat Sweden by a 4-3 count in overtime on Feb. 12 to begin the tournament, before dropping a 3-1 decision to the U.S. on Feb. 15. Canada finished with a 5-3 win over Finland on Monday to secure its spot in the tonight’s title tilt.
U.S. netminder Connor Hellebuyck is 2-0 in the 4 Nations Face-Off and owns a 1.00 goals against average and .957 save percentage. He is expected to get the start for Team USA.
Entering play tonight, Zach Werenski (0-5—5) is tied with Canada’s Sidney Crosby (1-4–5) as the top point getter in the tournament. Jake Guentzel (3-1—4) and Jack Eichel (0-4—4) are among four players each with four points. Guentzel is tied with Finland’s Mikael Granlund for the tournament lead in goals with three.
The U.S. and Canada have met 15 times in previous Canada Cup/World Cup of Hockey events and Canada holds a 10-4-1 (W-L-T) advantage.
