HERNING, Denmark –  Tage Thompson (Orange, Conn./Buffalo Sabres/University of Connecticut) scored a hat trick, including the game-winner, and Clayton Keller (St. Louis, Mo./Utah Mammoth/Boston University) recorded a goal and two assists as the U.S. Men’s National Team defeated Norway in overtime, 6-5, at the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship here tonight at Jyske Bank Boxen.

“I thought we did some good things and it was obviously great to get the win,” said Ryan Warsofsky, head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team. “We’ll build on this as we get set to take on a very good Germany team on Saturday.”

HIGHLIGHTS

Cutter Gauthier (Scottsdale, Ariz./Anaheim Ducks/Boston College) opened the scoring at 4:50 of the first as he rifled home a one-timer following a pass from Shane Pinto (Franklin Square, N.Y./Ottawa Senators/University of North Dakota). Keller extended the lead at 7:18, firing a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle through traffic that beat Norwegian netminder Tobias Normann.

Stein Solberg trimmed the U.S. lead to one at 9:59 on a power-play goal from the point. Thompson responded at 12:34, scoring on a shot from the top of the slot to give a 3-1 lead.

Mike McCarron (Macomb, Mich./Nashville Predators) added a tally with 2:10 left in the frame, tapping a pass from Drew O’Connor (Chatham, N.J./Vancouver Canucks/Dartmouth College) past Normann.

Thompson added his second of the game with a power-play tally at 2:55 of the second, wristing a shot home after stellar puck movement from Team USA. Solberg added his second power-play goal of the contest at 6:59 and Martin Ronnild added a third tally for Norway at 12:48.

Noah Steen got Norway within one at 11:08 of the third, capitalizing on a breakaway before Solberg tied the contest with the goalie pulled at 18:33 to force overtime.

After Keller drew a penalty in the three-on-three overtime session, Thompson completed his hat trick at 4:09, blasting a one-timer into the back of the net with Logan Cooley (Pittsburgh, Pa./Utah Mammoth/University of Minnesota) and Keller earning assists on the play.

U.S. netminder Jeremy Swayman (Anchorage, Alaska/Boston Bruins/University of Maine) picked up the win with 13 saves.

Team USA continues preliminary round action Saturday (May 17) against Germany at 12:20 p.m. local time (6:20 a.m. ET). All U.S. games during the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship can be seen live on NHL Network.

NOTES: Tage Thompson was named U.S. Player of the Game … The U.S. and Norway each went 2-5 on the power play … The U.S. outshot Norway, 39-18 … A total of 12 different players recorded at least one point for Team USA.
