Boxing divisional rankings: Opetaia keeps top spot at cruiserweight with spectacular KO

Boxing divisional rankings: Opetaia keeps top spot at cruiserweight with spectacular KO 1 | ASL

Jai Opetaia remains the unquestioned king of the cruiserweight division after a highlight-reel knockout of David Nyika on Wednesday in Gold Coast, Australia, to retain his IBF world title.

Nyika is still inexperienced and was fighting on the top level for the first time, but he remains a serious talent after a decorated amateur career that culminated with an Olympic bronze medal in 2020 for New Zealand. With just 11 pro fights, Nyika will have time to earn another title shot, where he should be better prepared.

Opetaia, meanwhile, called on WBO and WBA cruiserweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez to unify titles. Ramirez has looked his best in his third weight class and is coming off a decision win over Chris Billam-Smith in November where he added a second cruiserweight title.

Ramirez is ESPN’s No. 2 cruiserweight, right behind Opetaia.

“Ramirez, I’m coming for the belts,” Opetaia said. “I’ve been waiting for these fights for a long time.”

Opetaia’s promoter, Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn, called on Ramirez’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, to make the unification fight happen in May. If Opetaia can clean out the cruiserweight division, the way current heavyweight champion did before him, Hearn believes Opetaia could follow him to heavyweight.

“I believe he’s the only person right now … cruiserweight or heavyweight who can give Oleksandr Usyk a real, real fight,” Hearn said. “But to do it, we gotta pick up every belt in the cruiserweight division first to give him the credibility … to make Oleksandr Usyk get in the ring.”

ESPN’s divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. Rankings will change based on recent results and performances. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.

Fighters who haven’t competed in the past 12 months — and don’t have a fight scheduled — will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after his next bout.
