United Cup: Katie Boulter secures Team GB quarterfinal spot

British No. 1 Katie Boulter secured Great Britain a quarterfinal spot in the United Cup with a 6-2, 6-1 straight-set victory over Australia’s Olivia Gadecki.

Team GB needed a straight set victory in any of their matches to send them through as Group F winners.

Boulter won her match in 70 minutes to put GB 1-0 up and secure qualification. They had already secured a 2-1 win against Argentina in their opening clash on Tuesday.

“I’ve been trying to avoid all the stats on all this but we were at dinner with [former British No. 1] Laura Robson last night, and she thankfully told me I had to win in straight sets,” Boulter said.

“So I was feeling the pressure from last night.”

Boulter’s fiance, Australia’s Alex de Minaur, faced Billy Harris in the men’s singles and secured a straight-set victory.

The world No. 9 then secured a second straight-set victory alongside partner Gadecki when they beat British duo Olivia Nicholls and Charles Broom.

Despite the 2-1 defeat to Australia, Boulter’s victory secured team GB the quarterfinal spot over the hosts.
