Boxing divisional rankings: A new No. 1 at light heavyweight

There’s a new No. 1 light heavyweight in the ESPN rankings, though it came in controversial fashion.

Artur Beterbiev moved up from No. 2 to the top spot after his disputed majority decision victory over Dmitry Bivol on Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, that crowned him undisputed champion at 175 pounds.

Both boxers welcomed a rematch afterward, as did Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, so we could see a return bout next year. The division’s No. 3 and No. 4 fighters, David Benavidez and David Morrell, are slated to meet Jan. 25 in Las Vegas.

The rankings also saw plenty of movement in the lower weight classes following action in Tokyo on Sunday and Monday as multiple titles changed hands. That includes Takuma Inoue (the younger brother of Naoya Inoue), who lost his WBA bantamweight title to Seiya Tsutsumi via unanimous decision.

The upset defeat spoils The Monster’s plan to have Japanese rival Junto Nakatani first face Takuma before a potential shot at him during the summer at the Tokyo Dome. Nakatani handled business as usual Monday with a sixth-round TKO of Petch Sor Chitpattana to retain his WBC bantamweight title. All four 118-pound titles belong to Japanese fighters.

ESPN’s divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. Rankings will change based on recent results and performances. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.

Fighters who haven’t competed in the past 12 months — and don’t have a fight scheduled — will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after his next bout.
