Bulls’ Ayo Dosunmu to have shoulder surgery, out 4-6 months

CHICAGO — Bulls guard Ayo Dosunmu said he has a fracture in the back of his left shoulder and will undergo surgery on Wednesday morning. He will need four to six months to recover.

An MRI revealed a fracture that was at least a year old, according to Dosunmu. He acknowledged feeling discomfort in his shoulder for an extended period but had been able to play through it in the past.

After feeling discomfort during a Feb. 20 game against the Knicks, Dosunmu missed the next three games. He returned to play 23 minutes on Friday night against the Raptors, but said he experienced a different pain than usual during the game.

“I don’t remember where it started at, but I do remember having it,” Dosunmu said before the Bulls’ game Tuesday against the Cavs. “My shoulder goes numb and [would pop] out in the back. I do remember that numerous times, but I can’t tell you the exact date.

“It was something that I played on and I think I could have continued to play on, but I don’t know for what reason.”

Dosunmu, 25, will be undergoing surgery for the first time and he expects to be ready for the start of training camp next season, which will be the final year on a three-year, $21 million contract.

He played 46 games this season and averaged 12.3 points, 4.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds — all career highs.

“The whole season going out there, battling injuries, continuing to fight,” Dosunmu said, summing up his season. “Even the last game, just trying to give it my all. I had to help the team get win. Pretty much knew would probably been my last game of season. Just knew how I felt out there.”
